What is SKY Camp?

The purpose of SKY Camp is to offer education and support to grieving children and their families after the death of a loved one. SKY Camp offers a safe place for campers to explore feelings and to share experiences with others of similar ages, while providing a foundation for growth through the grieving process.

SKY Camp Objectives

SKY Camp’s goal is to facilitate the grief process following the death of a a loved one. The following objectives will help achieve this goal.

  • To provide campers with information on grief in order to facilitate a better understanding and expression of their own feelings.
  • To provide campers with an opportunity to meet in an accepting and safe environment, and to share with other children who have exerienced the death of a loved one.
  • To enable campers to merge their feelings with memories of their loved one.
  • To increase camper’s awarenesss of available support systems.
  • To instill in campers feelings of hope for their future.

Differences Between Child & Adult Grief

Children in our society are the forgotten mourners.  They grieve, but often they don’t get the opportunity to express their feelings openly.

“Denial, anger, guilt, sadness and longing are felt by young and old alike in response to the loss of a loved person, but most children have limited ability to verbalize their feelings,, as well as very limited capacity to tolerate the pain generated by open recognition of their loss.  Children tend to show their distress through their behavior”

Adults have the capacity to recognize that they are grieving.  Children, up to the age of 9 or 10, often have no understanding of the feelings they are experiencing.

Adults feel an immediate intensity of loss and experience grief for long periods at a time. Children have short attention spans and can experience very brief grief reactions several times a day — short sadness spans.

“When death comes to a family, the family circle is broken forever. Parents are so immersed in their own grief that they have little energy left to help the surviving children, thus casting the child into the role of the “non-griever” and leaving him or her powerless, angry, and confused.”
